In 1803, a sandstone lighthouse was built on the cape, and in 1870 it was replaced by the Hatteras brick lighthouse. The lighthouse takes the form of a conical structure rising from an octagonal brick and granite base topped by an iron and glass lantern. It is the tallest brick lighthouse in the USA and one of the tallest stone lighthouses in the world
